Beyond the threshold

There is a place where we can go, and there, nothing is a problem any more.

There is just peace. There is just serenity. But, it takes a little work to get there.

Let me try to explain…

You’ve heard me talk before of all the many great benefits of breathing for a few minutes every day.

When I’m training people to become breathwork teachers, they learn all about that.

When we become familiar with that, then we can begin to travel deeper into the experience. Like following a map, we can follow our breathing into an internal landscape within the mind and within the body.

The breath is the path; all we have to do is follow it.

Where does it take us?

After about 10 minutes of breathing, we usually feel calmer.

After about 20 minutes of breathing, we usually feel rested and restored.

After 30 minutes of breathing, something changes.

Finally, the nervous system stops resisting and we move into a profound state of peace and lightness.

This is the point we call going beyond the threshold.

It takes a while to get there, but it’s worth it.

It’s often described as dreaming but being awake. We are calm and alert. We have drifted beyond our usual thoughts. We have forgotten the limitations and fears that we usually carry.

We are mellow.

We are at ease.

We have gone beyond the threshold.

I feel we need to go there when we can, so we can come back better.

Over the years, many, many people have come up to me after events and have used their own words to try to describe this place. I love hearing how they describe it:

  • Freeing

  • Transformative

  • Cosmic

  • Lush

  • Enlivening

  • Transcendent

  • Magical

Everyone describes it differently.

It gives us a wider perspective on our lives and the people in it. It gives us time to unravel the problems we’ve been thinking about. It gives us space and time.

On my app, there are longer sessions that certainly can take people beyond the threshold.

My favourite way to do it though is in-person. I love creating experiences for people that allow them to go to wherever they need to go.

And I only do this with people I really trust.

This is my favourite combination:

Ceremonial cacao guided by Josie that nourishes us, slows us down, gives us time to prepare for a journey inwards.

Then, it’s my turn to guide people, changing how they breathe in order to change how they feel and think. All the while, following the breath deeper and deeper towards, and beyond, the threshold.

Then, on special occasions, we go further again by using the healing power of sound. Emma West is a master of this and it’s always a privilege to experience her sounds and voice after cacao and after breathing.

It’s a truly serene experience. We have gone beyond the threshold.
